Size and Shape:

Color Pattern:

Wood Ducks are renowned for their vibrant and varied color patterns, which are especially pronounced in males. Male Wood Ducks showcase a myriad of colors, from their iridescent green and purple crested heads, to their red eyes and bright yellow beaks. They also have a white throat patch, and their chest is burgundy with intricate white patterning, often described as looking like fine lacework. Females, while more subdued in their coloring, are equally impressive. They display a grey-brown body color, with a distinctive white eye-ring and a whitish throat. Their crested head has a warm, iridescent blue-green hue, which contrasts beautifully with their otherwise neutral-toned plumage.

Juvenile Wood Ducks resemble the females in color but lack the females' crested head and the male's vibrant colors. As they mature, males gradually develop their eye-catching adult plumage, which they display proudly during the breeding season. These vibrant color patterns not only make Wood Ducks easy to identify but also play an essential role in their social and mating behaviors. Wood Ducks exhibit an array of intriguing behaviors that are deeply tied to their unique lifestyle. They are crepuscular in nature, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk. These periods of the day are when they venture out to forage, primarily feeding on seeds, fruits, insects, and aquatic plants. Mating in Wood Ducks typically starts in January, with males displaying a range of courtship behaviors, from preening, shaking, and wing-flapping to more complex rituals involving nod-swimming and ritualized drinking. These elaborate displays, complemented by their vibrant plumage, are all geared towards attracting a mate.

Wood Ducks are one of the few duck species equipped with strong claws that can grip bark and perch on branches. They often nest in tree cavities or nest boxes, which is a rarity among ducks. Once a suitable site has been found, the female lays a clutch of 7-15 white to creamy eggs. Parenting in Wood Ducks is predominantly the female's role. After the ducklings hatch, the female dutifully leads them to water. A memorable sight is the moment when the ducklings take their 'leap of faith' from the nest, which can be as high as 60 feet off the ground, to follow their mother to their aquatic home.

Despite their relatively social nature during the breeding season, Wood Ducks are not particularly gregarious. Outside of the breeding season, they tend to be seen alone or in small groups rather than in large flocks.



Wood Ducks are adaptable and can be found in a wide range of habitats. They predominantly inhabit freshwater bodies such as swamps, marshes, ponds, and lakes, especially in areas with ample vegetation. This preference is largely because these environments provide them with abundant food resources and offer cover from predators. A unique aspect of Wood Ducks is their affinity for wooded environments, which is quite unusual for a duck species. This has earned them their name. They are often found in forested wetlands, where they use tree cavities for nesting. Their strong claws allow them to grip tree branches, an ability most other duck species lack.

Wood Ducks have a broad distribution range across North America. They are most commonly found in the eastern United States, the west coast, and parts of Canada. During winter, many Wood Ducks migrate south to the warmer parts of their range, although those in milder regions may choose to stay put throughout the year. Their habitat preferences are influenced by the availability of food, nesting sites, and suitable cover. The quality and availability of these resources greatly impact Wood Duck populations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining healthy, diverse ecosystems.
